Princess Noura Bint Abdulrahman University is regarded as one of the fruits of care and concern for women's higher education. This concern started early with the establishment of the first educational girls’ college, by the General Presidency of Girls Education in 1970 (1390H). Subsequently, colleges have been inaugurated until their count reached 102 colleges, ranging from university colleges to community colleges distributed over 72 Saudi cities and totaling 600,000 female students. In Riyadh city alone, there were six colleges: College of Education for Literary Department, College of Education for Scientific Department, College if Education for Preparing Teachers, College of Social Services, College of Education for Home Economics, and College of Arts.
In 2007 (1427H), a royal directive was issued to establish the first girls’ university in Riyadh under supervision of the Ministry of Higher education including the six colleges existing in Riyadh after restructuring them, as well as the establishment of several new colleges serving the journey of development in the Kingdom. On Wednesday, 29/10/1429H, the University was honored by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz, who laid the foundation stone of the university campus, and changed its name to Princess Noura Bint Abdulrahman University after the name of the sister of the founder of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, late King Abdulaziz Bin Abdulrahman.
Princess Noura University is regarded as the sole female university in the Middle East and officially opened on 16th of May 2011.
